DAVID WILLIAMS

About the Artist

I want to welcome you to my page. Let me start by introducing myself and the work I do. My name is David Williams AKA Chato,Spade,D.Wams…More names to come Im sure.  The work I do is in the art field. My professional background goes back to the age of 16. 1985…My first work was for Darick (Transmetropolitan) Robertson and Tibor Sardy atTen Buck Comics..The book “Space Beaver”…It’s not what you are thinking. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:SpaceBeaver1.jpg  http://www.darickr.com/My first taste of comicbook work….I was hooked!  Then I did a whole comic for “New Comics Group” and got ART ADAMS  to do the cover….That to all geeks at that time was like having God himself do a cover for your book! The book  was “Tommy and the Monsters”.http://www.tslendinga.com/NCG/tommy.jpg

Then from there it got dry…………………Real dry.

I went through many phases of art styles none where capturing the

minds of the big boys @ DC and Marvel….At this point I just gave up on the idea.

I was getting rejected left and right from editors… Comic Convention after

Comic Convention…I was still in High School at this point.

Anyway I decided to  not to draw for editors and the such. I started

drawing for myself..This was a major turning point for me artistically.

My horizons broadened without me even noticing.

The following year I went to a Oakland Comic Convention with some friends

Darick Robertson and Gene Sprague.

I had no intention of getting work but my buds told me to bring my

portfolio anyway…I ran into Dave (Rocketeer) Stevens that I knew over the years.

Dave use to always call me Michael Jackson….Don’t ask.

So he say’s “Hey MJ! What have you been up to?” Meaning what have you been drawing.

I was very reluctant to share because I didn’t think much of the work.

Anyway his reaction was very pleased with what he saw.

I thought he was putting me on but he was sincere. He proceeded to

make me go and show it to the “big boys”. I did with that boost of confidence from “THE MAN.”

Me and my ego went straight over to Marvel and Tom Defalco…. and got shot down.

Man!!! I felt like everybody was laughing at me even the old ancient ancestors

who drew on cave walls. If Dave wasn’t “THE MAN” I would have kicked his @$$ for

sending me to my utter demise in comics… So,I go back to Dave with my

head slumped down. I told him what happened, then Dave snatched my portfolio

from my hand and said “Come on!”

He marched me straight to the DC booth and the editor Michael Eury http://www.visibleink.com/author.php?id=83

and proceeded to say “If you guys don’t see the talent in this kid and get him some

work…. I will never do any projects for you!”

So a small pause of silence in the whole convention hall….Then…Tick, tock, tick, tock,…

I was assigned a gig…Then the crowd went wild!!!! Hugs, tear, kisses and laughter went all around.

Then Marvel editor (Tom Defalco.. with tail between legs) caught wind of DC’s new talent and offered me a back-up story.

Needless to say I turned it down…Nothing against Marvel… : ) Not long after that I married my High school sweetheart Sandra…Had 3 beautiful kids and as they say…“ The rest is History.

“My ability lead me to work for great companies and people such as…D.C,Marvel,Malibu,Image,Dark Horse,Topps, Randomhouse, Warnerbros Animation,Sony Animation, MGM Animation, Warnerbros Consumer Products,CartoonNetWork and others that I can’t remember or don’t want to…. ; /

So there it is. My story.
